Issues
All parties at a workplace have an obligation to ensure the health & safety of themselves and others. Some legal obligations are documented in Acts and Regulations, and some are a matter for self regulation.
You can better meet your obligations by taking a systematic approach to occupational health and safety, and planned management systems (or OHSMS) are becoming increasingly common. In contrast to the issue of quality management, there is no universally recognised international standard. However, there are standards that are widely recognised. For example:
OHSAS 18001 which was developed by a group of leading certification bodies from an existing British standard.
AS/NZS 4801 which was developed by the Australian and New Zealand standards associations.
Both of these have been designed to integrate with the ISO 9001 Quality and ISO 14001 Environmental standards - having similar requirements for document control, internal audits, management review, and corrective and preventive action.
